  • Multitasking with Raspberry Pi

    Multitasking with Raspberry Pi

Multitasking and multiprocessing have become a very important topic in microcontroller-based systems, namely in complex commercial, domestic, and industrial automation applications. As the complexity of projects grows, more functionalities are demanded from the projects. Such projects require the use of multiple inter-related tasks running on the same system and sharing the available resources, such as the CPU, memory, and input-output ports. As a result of this, the importance of multitasking operations in microcontroller-based applications has grown steadily over the last few years. Many complex automation projects now make use of some form of a multitasking kernel. This book is project-based and its main aim is to teach the basic features of multitasking using the Python 3 programming language on Raspberry Pi. Many fully tested projects are provided in the book using the multitasking modules of Python. Each project is described fully and in detail. Complete program listings are given for each project. Readers should be able to use the projects as they are, or modify them to suit their own needs. The following Python multitasking modules have been described and used in the projects: Fork Thread Threading Subprocess Multiprocessing The book includes simple multitasking projects such as independently controlling multiple LEDs, to more complex multitasking projects such as on/off temperature control, traffic lights control, 2-digit, and 4-digit 7-segment LED event counter, reaction timer, stepper motor control, keypad based projects, car park controller, and many more. The fundamental multitasking concepts such as process synchronization, process communication, and memory sharing techniques have been described in projects concerning event flags, queues, semaphores, values, and so on.

  • Cytron Maker Pi RP2040 - Robotica met Raspberry Pi RP2040

Cytron Cytron Maker Pi RP2040 - Robotics with Raspberry Pi RP2040

    1 review

Cytron Maker Pi RP2040 features the first microcontroller designed by Raspberry Pi – RP2040, embedded on a robot controller board. This board comes with dual channel DC motor driver, 4 servo motor ports and 7 Grove I/O connectors, ready for your next DIY robot / motion control project. Now you can build robot, while trying out the new RP2040 chip. The DC motor driver onboard is able to control 2x brushed DC motors or 1x bipolar/unipolar stepper motor rated from 3.6 V to 6 V, providing up to 1 A current per channel continuously. The built-in Quick Test buttons and motor output LEDs allow functional test of the motor driver in a quick and convenient way, without the need of writing any code. Vmotor for both DC and servo motors depends on the input voltage supplied to the board. Maker Pi RP2040 features all the goodness of Cytron's Maker series products. It too has lots of LEDs useful for troubleshooting (& visual effects), is able to make quite some noise with the onboard piezo buzzer and comes with push buttons ready to detect your touch. There are three ways to supply power to the Maker Pi RP2040 – via USB (5 V) socket, with a single cell LiPo/Li-Ion battery or through the VIN (3.6-6 V) terminals. However only one power source is needed to power up both controller board and motors at a time. Power supply from all these power sources can all be controlled with the power on/off switch onboard. Cytron Maker Pi RP2040 is basically the Raspberry Pi Pico + Maker series' goodness + Robot controller & other useful features. Therefore this board is compatible with the existing Pico ecosystem. Software, firmware, libraries and resources that are developed for Pico should work seamlessly with Cytron Maker Pi RP2040 too. CircuitPython is preloaded on the Maker Pi RP2040 and it runs a simple demo program right out-of-the-box. Connect it to your computer via USB micro cable and turn it on, you will be greeted by a melody tune and LEDs running light. Press GP20 and GP21 push buttons to toggle the LEDs on/off, while controlling any DC and servo motors connected to it to move and stop. With this demo code, you get to test the board the moment you receive it! While connected to your computer, a new CIRCUITPY drive appears. Explore and edit the demo code (code.py & lib folder) with any code editor you like, save any changes to the drive and you shall see it in action in no time. That's why we embrace CircuitPython – it's very easy to get started. Wish to use other programming lauguages? Sure, you are free to use MicroPython and C/C++ for Pico/RP2040. • DVI Sock for Raspberry Pi Pico

DVI Sock for Raspberry Pi Pico

Unlike other Raspberry Pi boards, the Raspberry Pi Pico does not have a built-in video output. However, thanks to programmable IO (PIO) and this Pico DVI Sock, it is possible to add a DVI video output to the Raspberry Pi Pico! The Pico DVI Sock was developed by Luke Wren, a Raspberry Pi engineer, in his spare time. He has published the design online under a CC0 license, so everybody can build the hardware from his provided files. The physical video interface of the Pico DVI Sock is an HDMI connector, but it outputs a DVI signal. Historically, HDMI is a successor to DVI – so DVI signals can be simply transmitted using HDMI. Simple passive adapters allow you to connect HDMI cables to a DVI port. The DVI Sock can be soldered to one end of the Raspberry Pi Pico. Thanks to the castellated edges of the Pico, soldering is very easy. Let your creativity run wild with an additional digital video output on the Pico. Here are some suggestions / possible project ideas: Mini game console based on the Raspberry Pi Pico Output of measurement values on a monitor

  • Raspberry Pi 4 OR 5 AND Pico

Raspberry Pi 4 OR 5 AND Pico

Cool Projects for Test, Measurement, and Control The Raspberry Pi has dominated the maker scene for many years. Freely accessible I/O pins have made it one of the most popular processor boards of all time. However, the classic Raspberry Pi has no analog inputs. Direct measurement of analog values is therefore not possible. Consequently, photodiodes, NTCs, Hall sensors, etc. cannot be read directly. In addition, the pins are connected directly to the exposed contacts, i.e. without a driver or protection circuit. This can quickly destroy the central controller and thus the entire Raspberry Pi. These problems can be elegantly solved with the Pico. As a front-end, it can easily handle a wide range of measurement tasks. In addition, the Pico is much cheaper than a classic Raspberry Pi 4 or 5. If a faulty circuit leads to the destruction of the Pico, this is relatively easy to handle. This makes the combination of a classic Raspberry Pi 4 or 5 and the Pico an ideal pair. The book introduces the broad and highly topical field of modern controller technology using the combined force of a Raspberry Pi 4 or 5 and a Raspberry Pi Pico. In addition to a detailed introduction to the operation and functionality of the controller boards themselves, the book also focuses on data acquisition and processing with digital processors. Especially the combination of both systems offers a wide range of interesting possibilities. Some practical projects from the contents: USB between Raspberry Pi 4 or 5 and Pico I²C Communication and Pico as an I²C device Voltmeter and Computer Thermometer Pico W as a Web Server and WLAN Scanner Frequency Meters and Generators OLED Displays on Raspberry Pi 4 or 5 and Pico Energy Saving Monitor Which Astronauts are in Orbit? Buy a Raspberry Pi

What is Raspberry Pi? Why do you need a Raspberry Pi board? What are the benefits?

Raspberry Pi is a minicomputer or a so-called Single Board Computer (or SBC for short) from the Raspberry Pi Foundation from Cambridge (GB). In a single-board computer, all important components such as the processor, RAM and GPU are mounted on one board.

The foundation published the first Raspberry Pi version in 2012 with the idea of promoting computer science as a school and study subject. The main goal to achieve this was a retail price of $35 that should be affordable for everyone.

Elektor also wanted to arouse early interest in computer science and electronics among pupils and students. As an official Raspberry Pi reseller, Elektor has direct personal contact with the Raspberry Pi developers in Cambridge and with the actual intellectual father of the Raspberry Pi, Eben Upton. Elektor not only offers official Raspberry Pi hardware, but also offers its customers interesting first-hand projects, reviews, tutorials and specialist books. Elektor thus occupies a special position among all Raspberry Pi dealers.

Smart Home projects with Raspberry Pi

Today, a Smart Home is one of the most used applications for the Raspberry Pi. The reason for this is logical because a Smart Home provides more comfort in the home and makes saving on energy costs easy. Below you will find three of the most commonly used applications of Raspberry Pi in a Smart Home environment

Home automation system

The Raspberry Pi can be used to build a home automation system that allows you to perform tasks automatically. This includes controlling lighting, heating, entertainment and air conditioning.

Home monitoring

Home monitoring is a system that uses sensors to take measurements of your home environment and transmit this information to a central device. The system can take measurements of: temperatures, humidity, light intensity and movement. Use home monitoring to monitor your home environment, allowing you to use alarm systems, security cameras and other devices to protect your home.

A good example of this is when you close your roller shutters automatically as soon as it threatens to get too hot. This way you can easily restore the heat in your home.

Smart switches

A smart switch is a device used to turn electrical appliances on and off remotely. It is a wireless device that is connected to your home network and can be controlled with a mobile app, a remote control or a voice assistant.

A good example of smart switches combined with Raspberry Pi is turning off lights when you watch a movie via Kodi. You can even go so far that when you pause the movie, the lights come back on.
