What is a digital microscope? Who uses digital microscopes?

A digital microscope is a tool for viewing electronic parts of different sizes. In essence it is an ordinary microscope, but it has the advantage that the image is recorded with a digital camera and displayed on a screen, often using computer software. Engineers, makers and scientists use digital microscopes in various domains, such as education, research and industrial production.

One of the first prototypes of the digital microscope was connected to a computer via an S-video cable. Because it was not possible to transfer large amounts of digital information, they switched to Firewire 800.

The technology continued to grow and since the end of 2015 the connection to the computer is made using USB. The USB connection is fast and allows for a compact design, as only one cable is needed. Another advantage is that all kinds of magnification and image quality settings are possible.

A digital microscope that is connected to a USB port of a PC is called a USB microscope. That is an energy-efficient, cheap solution.

Which digital microscope should I buy?

A digital microscope allows you to quickly view and analyze the image using software. It saves you from eye strain and allows you to sit in a relaxed position because the image is displayed on a screen.

Elektor supplies various digital microscopes with high-quality sensors, reasonable image depth, high magnification (up to 300x) and other facilities for thorough inspection. We have, among other things, the USB Digital Microscope with camera, software and user manual, and the Full HD HDMI Digital Microscope with LCD screen for precise examination and problem-free soldering.

There are also accessories, such as lenses, LED rings, power supplies and remote control. Elektor supplies different camera types and an optional LCD screen.

Our top models are the Andonstar AD407 and AD409 HDMI Digital Microscope. But which one is right for you?

They are both excellent digital microscopes. Both have an HDMI output, so you can view the image on a large screen. They can provide different video signals such as UHD 2880x2160 and both support MP4 video format. The image sensor of the AD407 and AD409 has a resolution of 4 Megapixels HD. But there are also important differences:

  • The AD407 has a screen diagonal of 7 inches. But its successor, the AD409, has a screen that's 3 inches larger, which is an improvement that will put less strain on your eyes. Moreover, this digital microscope offers a magnification of up to 300x, while the AD407 only has a magnification of 200x.
  • The larger screen also has a disadvantage: the AD409 weighs 2.2 kg, which is 600 g more than the AD407. So if you want a lighter version and are happy with a 7 inch screen, the AD407 is the best choice.
  • But if you want PC support and mobile connectivity, then you should go for the AD409. With support for Windows (7 or higher) and WiFi functionality, the AD409 sets the bar a lot higher.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of digital microscopes?

  • Digital microscopes provide high-resolution images at a variety of viewing angles and magnification levels. Electronics engineers can see the smallest details with ease. But you have to make a trade-off: the better the quality, the higher the price.
  • Digital microscopes are portable, easy to handle, and therefore flexible. They can be used in any environment without any problems. All a portable digital microscope needs is a USB connection to a power source.
  • Digital microscopes save time and offer convenience because they are easier to use than traditional microscopes. They are therefore often used in education, where children can easily work with their research objects.

In conclusion, the benefits are focused on important aspects of modern life, and purchasing a digital microscope can only bring great benefits.

Why buy a digital microscope from Elektor?

Whether you're a professional or a serious maker, a digital microscope is an essential tool for your workbench. A digital microscope allows you to study electronic systems by capturing and documenting the smallest components. An advantage of purchasing such a tool from Elektor is that our own design team uses them extensively in our laboratory. We therefore produce a lot of material (articles, reviews and videos) where these tools can be seen. This way you can learn how other engineers use them.
