The Internet of Things is rapidly gaining interest, and that has fueled the development of the Edison. A tiny computer, the size of a postage stamp, with a lot of power and built-in wireless communication capabilities. In this eBook we will help you get up-to-speed with the Edison, by installing the software both on the Edison as well as on your Windows PC. We will use the Edison Arduino break-out board because it is easy to work with. We will discuss Linux, Arduino C++ and Python, and show examples of how the Edison can interface with other hardware. We will use Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to set up wireless connections, and show you a trick to program sketches over Wi-Fi. Once you have completed this book your Edison will be up and running with the latest software version, and you will have sufficient knowledge of both hardware and software to start making your own applications. You will even be able to program the Edison over USB and wireless both in Arduino C++ and Python. This is not a projects eBook, but a toolbox that will allow you to explore the wonderful world of the Intel Edison!

Eén ding hebben alle elektronische schakelingen en apparaten gemeen: de werking ervan staat of valt met de voeding. Alleen al daarom verdient deze deelschakeling speciale aandacht. Dit boek behandelt principes en schakelingen uit de praktijk van de voedingstechniek. Geheel in overeenstemming met de huidige trend gaat de auteur in het bijzonder in op 'mobiele' voedingen en op de techniek van schakelende voedingen. Ook wordt aandacht besteed aan het feit dat constante-stroombronnen ten opzichte van spanningsbronnen een steeds belangrijker rol gaan spelen. Naast de vereiste theoretische achtergronden en principes voor het ontwerpen en bouwen van eigen voedingsschakelingen biedt dit boek ook praktische toepassingsvoorbeelden, zoals het vervangen van defecte nettransformatoren, de voeding voor elektronica tijdens fietstochten of het aansturen van LED‘s in de verlichtingstechniek. Auteur Franz Peter Zantis is afgestudeerd als ingenieur communicatietechniek en houdt zich als elektronicus bezig met energie-installaties. The newcomer to Microchip’s PIC microcontrollers invariably gets an LED to flash as their first attempt to master this technology. You can use just a simple LED indicator in order to show that your initial attempt is working, which will give you confidence to move forward. This is how the book begins — simple programs to flash LEDs, and eventually by stages to use other display indicators such as the 7-segment display, alphanumeric liquid crystal displays and eventually a colour graphic LCD. As the reader progresses through the book, bigger and upgraded PIC chips are introduced, with full circuit diagrams and source code, both in assembler and C. In addition, a small tutorial is included using the MPLAB programming environment, together with the EAGLE schematic and PCB design package to enable readers to create their own designs using the book’s many case studies as working examples to work from.

Microcontrollers have become an indispensable part of modern electronics. They make things possible that vastly exceed what could be done previously. Innumerable applications show that almost nothing is impossible. There’s thus every reason to learn more about them, but that raises the question of where to find a good introduction to this fascinating technology. The answer is easy: this Microcontroller Basics book, combined with the 89S8252 Flash Board project published by Elektor Electronics. However, this book offers more than just a basic introduction. It clearly explains the technology using various microcontroller circuits and programs written in several different programming languages. Three microcontrollers from the 8051 family are used in the sample applications, ranging from the simple 89C2051 to the AN2131, which is designed to support USB applications. The programming tools include assemblers, Basic-52 and BASCOM-51, and several C compilers. Every reader can thus find the programming environment most suitable to his or her needs. In the course of the book, the reader gradually develops increased competence in converting his or her ideas into microcontroller circuitry. All of the sample programs can be downloaded from the Elektor Electronics website or the author’s website. That has the added advantage that the latest versions are always available.
