Details

The larger 4.2-inch (10,67 cm) screen display opens up many more possibilities, with significantly more space to display information. The display is accurate and readable in bright sunlight. You can use it as detailed weather display, as a calendar, for daily news reports, to list household chores, or you could even use it as a tiny DIY e-reader to read your e-books.

The wHAT comes fully assembled, so you just need to mount it on your Pi using the supplied metal stand-offs, and a GPIO header extender to increase the height for full-size Pi models. Meanwhile, you should be careful and not put too much force on the fragile glass screen.

Main features

  • 4.2" (10,67 cm) EPD display (400x300 pixels)
  • 40-pin female header included to boost height for Pi B+, 2, 3, 3B+
  • Standoffs included to securely attach to your Pi
  • Additional pins, including I²C and SPI, broken out
  • Inky wHAT pinout
  • Compatible with Raspberry Pi 3B+, 3, 2, B+, A+, Zero, and Zero W
  • Python library
  • Comes fully assembled

Multi-colour EPD displays, like the one on Inky wHAT, use ingenious electrophoresis to pull coloured particles up and down on the display. The coloured particles reflect light, unlike most display types, meaning that they're visible under bright lights. It takes approximately 25 seconds to refresh the display.

A single command installs the Inky Python library and code examples, including a few specifically for the larger screen. There are also some examples that demonstrate the capabilities of the display.

Note: The video below shows a previous version of the display, Inky pHAt, which is smaller than the version demonstrated here. It also has red ink, which the version sold here doesn't have.
