Wat is een voeding? Waarom heb je er een nodig?

Een voeding is een apparaat dat elektriciteit levert aan een belasting. Zijn voornaamste functie is de elektrische stroom van een bron om te zetten in de juiste spanning, stroom en frequentie voor de voeding van een belasting. Een voeding kan onder meer de volgende functies hebben: de stroom die door de belasting wordt afgenomen tot veilige niveaus beperken, de stroom uitschakelen in geval van een elektrische storing, en energie opslaan in geval van een tijdelijke stroomuitval.

Er zijn verschillende soorten voedingen. Een gelijkstroomvoeding zet wisselstroom (AC) om in een stabiele gelijkstroom (DC) spanning. Een wisselstroomvoeding neemt de spanning uit een stopcontact en past die met een transformator aan tot de benodigde spanning.

Let op dat 12-V voedingen (of 12-VDC voedingen) tot de meest gebruikte voedingen van dit moment behoren. In het algemeen wordt een 12-VDC uitgang verkregen uit een 120-VAC of 240-VAC ingang met behulp van een combinatie van transformatoren, diodes, en transistors. Wanneer je de uitgang wilt regelen, kun je een programmeerbare voeding gebruiken, waarmee je spanning, stroomsterkte en andere parameters kunt regelen met een analoog stuursignaal dat via een toetsenbord, een handschakelaar of via een computer interface kan worden gestuurd.

Wat zijn adapters? Waar worden ze voor gebruikt?

Een wisselstroomadapter wordt gebruikt om de ene wisselspanning om te zetten in een andere wisselspanning. Een wisselstroomadapter zet bijvoorbeeld spanning uit een stopcontact om in 12 V wisselspanning. Daardoor zal een 12-V wisselstroomadapter van 36 W een maximale output van 3 A hebben.

Een gelijkstroomadapter zet wisselstroom om in gelijkstroom. Een 12-V gelijkstroom adapter van 36 W heeft bovendien dezelfde output van 3 A. Het verschil is dat de stroom constant is, vloeiend in één richting, in plaats van de voortdurend omkerende wisselstroom die de wisselstroom adapter produceert.

Als een apparaat geen eigen stroomvoorziening heeft, heeft het een wisselstroomadapter nodig om stroom te krijgen. Bovendien helpt het hebben van een aparte en externe AC/DC voedingsadapter de afmetingen van elektronische apparaten te verkleinen door de noodzaak van een complete voedingsunit te elimineren, helpt de warmte die in een elektronisch apparaat geproduceerd wordt te verminderen, vermindert elektrische ruis, en verbetert de veiligheid.
