Does the World Want Lethal Autonomous Robots?

Should lethal autonomous robots be stopped from ever coming into existence? That is the question treated in a report published by the Human Rights Watch and the Harvard Law School’s International Human Rights Clinic. In their report “Losing Humanity: The Case Against Killer Robots” they argue that autonomous systems are inherently incapable to operate in compliance with the international laws of war.

 

Autonomous robots would be unable to make a distinction between civilians and combatants, lack the human compassion that naturally deters people from killing others and -because the robot is truly autonomous- no human can be held responsible for violations of laws of war.
