Wireless links of all colours

Published in issue 385, January 2009

DBPSK! OFDM! DVB! QAM!
In this issue with its central theme of wireless links, we’re going to try and give an overview of the most important current techniques, and see what the trends are for the months, indeed years, ahead.
The last few years have seen a decided move towards wireless links in the personal equipment market. We’re all very keen to have our PC on a network — but we hate all those cables! We want the TV to be connected to the hard drive holding our photos — but we don’t want to have to plug and unplug it every time. This is how Bluetooth (802.15.1 standard) came into being for synchronising our organisers, telephones and earpieces.
