Solar Cell Charger (Mini Project)

Avoids overcharging of NiCad batteries

Published in issue 364, April 2007

Solar Cell Charger (Mini Project)
In theory you could just connect a solar panel via a Schottky diode to several batteries connected in series. The internal resistance of a small solar panel is sufficiently large to limit the charging current to a safe value. But with such a simple circuit it would still be possible to overcharge the batteries. That's why we’ve put together a little charging circuit that avoids this.
