Without delving into the operation of the design, two things must have struck our readers as quite novel at the time: firstly, the use of an 80C535 microcontroller (not easily associated with 750-watt a.c. motors) and secondly, the sudden appearance of a GAL of the 20-legged variety. The GAL, in the end, caused the most concern as it was a relatively new component in 1994.
