Gigabit Crossover Cable

Published in issue 345, July 2005
We previously described a crossover cable in last year’s Summer Circuits issue (‘Home Network for ADSL’, p. 81). However, that cable cannot be used for GigaBit links, since all eight conductors are important in that case. A GigaBit link uses four signal pairs. If the cable is longer than 8 metres, it is also necessary for each paired set of conductors to be twisted together. Otherwise crosstalk will occur, which will cause data communication errors.
