Balancing LiPo Cells

-

Published in issue 345, July 2005

This circuit uses an IC that is actually designed for monitoring the supply voltage of a microcontroller circuit. The IC (IC1) normally ensures that the microcontroller receives an active-high reset signal whenever the supply voltage drops below 4.1 V. By contrast, the output goes low when the voltage is 4.1 V or higher.
In this circuit the output is used to discharge a LiPo cell as soon as the voltage rises above 4.1 V.

Extra info, Updates

In the circuit diagram, IC1 should be identified as a MAX6382XR41D2-T. Pin 1 should be connected to ground, and pin 3, to the positive supply voltage. Pin 2 is the RESET output.
