dsPIC Development Board
This powerful control board with a 16-bit dsPIC30F6010 offers plenty of application scope including motor control. The base board has interfaces for USB, RS232, CAN, I2C and ICD2. There are also four DACs and all essential signals are bonded out to expansion connectors. The expansion board described in the same edition has even more connectivity to offer.

Fast Responding CO2 Meter
A new CO2 meter was specially developed by Elektor Labs for use in confined spaces like cars. Thanks to the use of a sensor based on CO2 level detection by infrared light the meter has hardly any warm up time and should be ready to take measurements a minute or so after switch-on. Measured data are processed by an ATmega MCU that also takes care of driving a two-line LCD.

Auto Balancer for LiPo Battery Packs
With lithium-polymer battery packs it’s essential to keep a close watch on the charge distribution between cells to prevent one of these from being overcharged or deep discharged. Typically, special ICs are used for this purpose but this project shows that standard components can do the job equally well. A single LM324 and some power Darlington transistors are sufficient for a battery pack with up to five cells.
