SDR article is welcome for simplicity point of view. Thanks EE for such NICE Project.
B.Kainka deserves all the appreciation for the amount of effort on his continuation of simple designs published earlier.
Perhaps we expect maximum number of boards to be assembled and the article effectively used around the world and especially the world of amatures (SWLs)
While the ciecuit is with minimal components, as a sigle component CY27EE16ZE appears VERY costly. Whether any alternative could be suggested please.

A cheaper oscillator could be the ICS307-2

Its produces a little more noise and tuning is a bit more difficult. But I tested it with the SDR. It seemed ok.
Much better - but also more expensive - is a combination of DDS and multiplier. AD9835 + ICS501 was tested here:

Peter Carnegie (G8JCF) uses this combination in his SDR software too: http://www.g8jcf.dyndns.org/
The CY27EE16 is right in the middle of performance and price.

Hi,
Thanks to B. Kaika forhis fast reply.
i was able to get AD9951BRSZ for around $20/-. while my google search for Cy27EE16ZE indicated it at around $130/-
perhpas i may have mis-interpretted?
Can i know the approx price either $ or Pounds?

I was interested to read the SDR radio article but was ulitmately frustrated by it.
I am not much of a radio expert, but have always been interested. So I wanted to get an understanding of exactly what the software signal processing was doing, and other ways of implementing it.
While I know the intention of article was not to give a detailed explanation of how it worked - it was in the "Hands on" section- the links did not add anything to my understanding.
Any chance of a follow up article or a post with links to more informative articles

Hi B. Kainka and others,
recently i came across a case of failure of a radio Rx while interconnecting with a pc, when power failed
and restored-- even with UPS working.
most probably it is a dangerous situation. generally circuits are interconnected with -- bodyconnection established first. then only tip and ring of the jack. this is unfortunately impossible with PC audio kacks.
under such cases, perhaps the authors may help suggesting affordable protection devices so as not damage ones own life and the devices he/she is using. especially with LONG WIRE ant connected to SDR or DRM boards, lightening protection appears a must.
HAM radio guys know these tricks from experience. other enthusiasts may have to exercise caution-

I am using a Delta 44 soundcard with the Elektor SDR May 07 which I
have just built.
When I put G8JCFSDR into cal mode I get a s-meter reading of +12 over
9 not +40 over 9. I have set the Delta input to -10 dB which is its
highest gain setting. I have checked to make sure that I have built
the board correctly. I did notice that the picture of the board in
Elektor did have a 10 ohm in place of R25, and R10 and 22 are 470
ohms. This would make the output level and cal level much higher.
If Peter could make the s-meter in G8JCFSDR adjustable, this would be
a nice addition as the Delta card just has three input levels -10, 0,
and +10 dB.
Could any one tell me what the output level is in volts p-p at the
output of the Elektor SDR in cal mode.

CY27EE16FZEC was replaced by CY27EE16FZXEC in 2007.
Those used in the SDR were produced in week 19, 2007 on special request. It seems they were the last lot. Ak-Modul-Bus.de still has may left.

I was reall confused checking the homepage of Cypress on this part:

It is "Not Recommended for New Designs" but same time it is "Full Production". Also the evaluation board for same part is "Full production"...
It seems that guys at Modul Bus still have the part.

I got a free sample of CY27EE16FZXEC simply applaying for free samples at Cypress Web page. It is already on my desk at no $!

CY27EE16FZXEC is a lead-free (RoHS compliant) equivalent of CY27EE16FZEC. There should be no problem in using it in Elektor SDR receiver. However I have still to assembly the receiver, because I had to order FT232R at Digi-Key.

Hello to the group. I have recently completed the build of the SDR using homebuilt PCB from available drawings.
Utilized the CY27EE16FZXEC and appears to have loaded the InitCal.bin file, yet the generator does not produce any clock 3 or 5 output.
I have double checked all connections, traces and voltages to be good. The 10Mhz reference crystal reads 10.0020Mhz at IC3 pin 1.
Can anyone offer any suggestions to help me diagnose the EEPROM to determine if it is good or bad?
