Hello Everyone

I am currently developing a new soldering iron as the final year project of my BSc (Hons) Product Design degree at Bournemouth University, England.

At the moment I would like to address the handle and grip position…

Do people in general feel happy with the standard “pen” style grip? Would you prefer a more ergonomic “designed” handle? Would you appreciate a shortened distance from the fingertips to the iron bit?

Has anybody used the pistol grip style irons incorporating solder feed?

Any feedback or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Adam.

Adam, we tested a number of soldering irons and printed a report in the November 2006 issue. The 'feel' of the grip turned out to be an important aspect to most of our testers.

Hope it's of some help for your report.

One thing to consider is having the tip bent by something like 20-30 degrees. I have used tips cut from something like 6 gauge copper wire (I forget exactly) in the past, and rather liked the added flexibility in reaching connections when the tip became a little bent.

Please, if you do a sculpted body iron (my preference), please don't forget us left handed people. Keep the distance from the iron tip to where the iron is held as short as possible. Not as easy as it sounds unless you have some Space Shuttle insulation.

just recently I purchased a replacement bit for an Antex soldering iron.Within 1 week the tip had literally disintegrated. So If I were you I should be designing an everlasting soldering iron tip and while were here, and everlasting desoldering nozzle.!
And an everlasting battery to boot.

Well, I will prefer adjustable temperature soldering iron, but iron is virtually no warm enough to melt the solder will work through the bore welding. However, usually away from butane, iron and soldering guns (pistol grip these big heavy things). All solder have a common enemy called oxidation. Oxidation of iron has a black crust develops on the tip after use.
