Hi, I am an absolute newbie to electronics. I do however have an interest in my music and films. I am quiet keen on making myself an amplifier to play my Ipod through, the problem is there are a thousand and one projects advising you start with them. My question is would the "Mugen: A Hybrid Audio Amplifier" be a sensible starting point. I am in no rush to get the project started, if it is a good starting point would I buy the pcb and consumables from Elektor? i.e is the Mugen an elector product. Thank you for any help 2480

Hi, My personal opinion is that the Mugen, although a nice amp, is probably not the best one if you are new to electronics. It has a mix of technologies (tube, solid state) that each require some understanding. It is all well if it works when you turn it on, but that is almost never the case. You must be able to find the problem if something is not as it should be. My recommendation is to start with one of the so-called 'gain-clone' amplifiers, which are often used for iPod-type applications. The forum www.diyaudio.com has several threads for this; even complete sets of kits for gain clones. You need to do some searching but there is a lot of info. Also, if you hit a snag, there's tons of people willing to help you. Jan Didden
