What is a power supply? Why do you need one?

A power supply is a device that supplies electricity to a load. Its main function is to convert the electrical current from a source into the correct voltage, current and frequency to power a load. A power supply's functions may include limiting the current drawn by the load to safe levels, shutting down power in the event of an electrical fault, and storing energy in the event of a temporary power outage.

There are different types of power supplies. A direct current power supply converts alternating current (AC) into a stable direct current (DC) voltage. An alternating current power supply takes the voltage from a socket and adjusts it with a transformer to the required voltage.

Note that 12 V power supplies (or 12 VDC power supplies) are among the most commonly used power supplies at the moment. In general, a 12 VDC output is obtained from a 120 VAC or 240 VAC input using a combination of transformers, diodes, and transistors. If you want to control the output, you can use a programmable power supply, which allows you to control voltage, current and other parameters with an analog control signal that can be sent via a keyboard, a hand switch or via a computer interface.

What are adapters? What are they used for?

An AC adapter is used to convert one AC voltage into another AC voltage. For example, an AC adapter converts voltage from a wall socket into 12 V AC voltage. Therefore, a 36 W 12 V AC adapter will have a maximum output of 3 A.

A DC adapter converts alternating current into direct current. Also, a 36W 12V DC adapter has the same 3A output. The difference is that the current is constant, flowing in one direction, instead of the constantly reversing AC current that the AC adapter produces.

If a device does not have its own power supply, it will need an AC adapter to get power. In addition, having a separate and external AC/DC power adapter helps reduce the size of electronic devices by eliminating the need for a complete power supply unit, helps reduce the heat produced in an electronic device, reduces electrical noise, and improves safety.
